220 Missouri FCCLA students, advisors and parents traveled to Chicago, IL to attend the National Leadership Conference July 4-8, 2010. Watching fireworks from the Navy Pier started the NLC off with a bang! This year students from across the nation, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands came together to celebrate 65 years of leadership with FCCLA.
During the general sessions, the National Executive Council helped us remember what we have accomplished as an organization throughout the last 65 years - and what we can look forward to in the next 65. During the Business Session, Missouri took a stand against the proposed bylaws amendments, offering an amendment to the amendment. While our proposal ultimately failed, it was a good lesson in how the voice of a minority can still be heard by the majority with the use of parliamentary procedure.
Missouri did an excellent job in competing in STAR Events! We came home with 3 bronze, 24 silver and 58 gold medals. The Interior Design team tied for 1st place in their event competition. Congratulations!
Chicago had a lot to offer from deep dish pizzas to touring the Sears Tower. For our state event, we went on a wet but wonderful boat tour through Chicago and ate at an Italian restaurant on the pier. Even those who didn't get to go on the boat tour due to the weather have fond memories of the fun-filled evening.
Overall this year’s National Conference was a great success. Students got to show off their hard work in STAR Events and work on their leadership. As we had printed on the back of our state shirts - "We have unlimited opportunities ahead of us with 65 years behind us!"
What an awesome experience for students to be involved in! It was fun to keep track of the conference via your tweets and blog posts.
